Cam belt replacement — do not put it off

The cam belt (or timing belt) keeps your engine's valves and pistons moving in time with one another. It is a rubber component with a finite life, and when one snaps on an interference engine the pistons and valves collide. The result is usually a destroyed engine and a repair bill that exceeds what the car is worth.

There is no warning before a cam belt fails. This is genuinely one of the few jobs where preventative replacement is not optional.

When should it be changed?

It varies significantly by manufacturer — commonly somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, or every 4 to 6 years, whichever comes first. The time limit matters as much as the mileage, because the belt degrades with age even on a car that has barely been driven. We are experienced in cam belt and timing chain work, and we will normally recommend replacing the water pump and tensioners at the same time where they are driven by the belt — the labour is already being done, so doing it later means paying for that same strip-down twice.

A clutch is a wear item, and on a manual car it will eventually need replacing. Caught at the right time it is a planned job; left too long it can strand you and take the flywheel with it.

Signs your clutch is on the way out

• Slipping — engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate to match, most obvious uphill or in higher gears
• High biting point — the clutch grabs right at the top of the pedal travel
• Judder when pulling away from a standstill
• Difficulty selecting gears, or a crunch going into first or reverse
• A burning smell after hill starts or heavy traffic
• Noise when the pedal is pressed or released

We carry out full clutch replacement on all makes and models. Because a clutch job means removing the gearbox, we will always check the release bearing, and inspect the flywheel and slave cylinder while access is available — the sensible time to deal with them.
